Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler is the great social drama of a caged woman in the late nineteenth century. It explores her tormented desire for escape and her yearning for individual and spiritual freedom. It is recognised as a classic of realism and the title character of Hedda is considered one of the great dramatic roles in theatre.
